Jim Calhoun Coming Out Of Retirement For New Job: Reports

The Hall of Fame coach is returning to lead a new basketball program.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — Hall of Fame basketball coach Jim Calhoun is coming out of retirement to lead the new Division III men’s basketball program at the University of St. Joseph in West Hartford, according to multiple reports, including the Hartford Courant.

Calhoun retired in 2012 after guiding UConn to its third national championship. He was the head coach of the Huskies for 26 seasons and has been serving as a special assistant to the athletic director since retiring.

Dom Amore of the Courant reports that Calhoun will be the "architect" of the St. Joseph men’s basketball program, which begins play in the 2018-19 season, and he can’t be named coach at this time because he is still under contract at UConn.

Calhoun’s contract as an advisor at UConn runs through March 2018 and once that expires, he could be named coach at St. Joseph’s, but nothing is official yet, according to David Borges of the New Haven Register.

Calhoun, who has also appeared on ESPN’s college basketball telecasts since retiring, told ESPN that his heart “will always be with UConn.”
