Beloved Toy Store Closing In West Hartford

The toy store has been in the heart of West Hartford for 66 years.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — A beloved local toy store will close for good at the end of the month after 66 years as a prime destination for families in the West Hartford area.

According to WeHa.com, the "Toy Chest," located in the center of town since 1956 (albeit at different locations) is closing at the end of January due to the retirements of its owner and managers.

The announcement was made official last Friday, Jan. 6, with an email going out to longtime customers of a 50 percent off sale on all merchandise, according to WeHa.com.

WeHa.com reported a large group of families and children at the toy store Saturday, lining up to purchase a plethora of books, games, stuffed animals, dolls, children's furniture, etc.

WFSB Channel 3 reported that the 50 percent off sale began on Saturday, Jan. 7. The owners said, according to WFSB 3 TV, that “Our business has always been about creating smiles for the children who visit us daily. We have been blessed to see so many of our young customers grow up and come back with their families."

Last year, the local institution — owned by Marilyn Caruso for more than three decades — was named the West Hartford Chamber of Commerce's "Legacy Business of the Year," according to WTNH Channel 8.

The toy store has received numerous positive reviews over the years. One customer wrote, "What customer service! Can't thank you enough for bringing my wrapped gift to me at the ice cream shop when I didn't realize you would be closed upon my return. Such a wonderful selection of goodies too. Always find the perfect gift - thanks again."
