Mayflower Street Bridge Project to Begin Soon in West Hartford

The Connecticut Department of Transportation will start the rehabilitation work on the Mayflower Street Bridge on or about the week of March 1 in West Hartford.
The proposed rehabilitation project consists of replacing the existing bridge deck, structural steel members, and parapets, according to a press release.
Construction will occur in two stages. A travel lane will be maintained on Mayflower Street to accommodate alternating one-way traffic, controlled by a temporary traffic signal.

During Stage 1, traffic will use the east side of the existing structure while the west side is being constructed.
During Stage 2, traffic will shift to the newly constructed west side so the remainder of the structure can be built.

Boswell Road and Elmhurst Street will be closed at Mayflower Street for the duration of the project. Signed detours will be in place for both streets.
On Boswell Road traffic will be detoured to Cottage Ave and Crosshill Road. Elmhurst Street will be directed to utilize the southern intersection with Mayflower Street.
This detour is expected to be in place on or around March 20.
Pedestrian traffic will be maintained at all times, using the sidewalk adjacent to the travel lane.
Construction is anticipated to begin around March 1 (weather dependent) and be completed by December of 2016. The total construction duration is approximately nine months.
The rehabilitation of this bridge is to be undertaken with state funds, according to the press release. The project has been awarded to New England Infrastructure, Inc. at a cost of $6.28 million.
