Mayor Refrains from Identifying West Hartford as Sanctuary City

A high school student brought a petition before the town, asking officials to support immigrants and refugees.

WEST HARTFORD, CT - The West Hartford Town Council was presented with an opportunity to support immigrants and refugees Tuesday night, the Hartford Courant reported.

A 17-year old high school student brought a petition before the council asking officials to help protect and support immigrants and refugee neighbors, according to the Hartford Courant. The petition had nearly 1,000 signatures.

While Mayor Shari Cantor expressed the town’s stance on being a welcoming and inclusive town, she refrained from identifying West Hartford as a sanctuary city, the Hartford Courant reported. She said the title would cause additional scrutiny and is not in the best interest of the community.
