Mediation or Meditation? Mindfulness and the law.

Anyone who knows me knows that I am both a lawyer and a yoga teacher.  I began to do yoga early in my law career.  Diane Lees, Cleveland, Ohio yoga teacher, bicycle expert and all around calming and wise woman was my teacher, and I remember her like it was yesterday.  I went with one of my law school friends, and the time spent breathing and moving on the mat sometimes seemed like the opposite of the practice of law.  On the mat I felt peaceful and grounded.  As a brand new attorney, oftentimes I did not feel that way at all.

Fast forward about a decade and yoga is everywhere.  So is the word mindfulness and the practice of meditation is reaching the masses.  Corporations are touting the benefits of yoga and meditation in order to make their employees more productive.   I used to see my law practice and yoga practice as total opposites, but now I know doesn't have to be the case.

I have learned that my search engine gets very confused about the fact that I am interested in learning more about "meditation" and "mediation".  Confusing, huh?  Well, the two go hand in and really enhance each other.

More and more couples are choosing mediation as a tool to help them end their marriages amicably.  My mediation training depends largely on communication, and being mindful is a huge tool to help with that sometimes challenging task.  Mindfulness is defined as "aware, actively attentive, keeping something in mind." Sounds like what you need to do to be a good communicator during mediation, right?

Mindfuless is a tool that we can all afford to learn more about, and I know it is something that I have learned to bring off of my mat and into my desk chair.  Hopefully this idea will find it's way out of the yoga studio and trendy tech start up and into more law offices.  Contact me to talk more about mediation (or meditation).
