WEST HARTFORD, CT — Despite the game's name, Pickleball doesn't involve any preserved, sour-tasting cucumbers.

Rather, like tennis, it involves a paddle-like racket, a ball and a net.

And the Town of West Hartford just happens to have a new place to enjoy this fast-growing game that dates back to the mid-1960s.

Tuesday, West Hartford Leisure Services announced six new pickleball courts and two tennis courts are now open for play in the Buena Vista Recreation Complex on Cornerstone Drive.

The courts were under construction this past spring as part of the town’s capital improvements program, town officials said in a release.

As part of the project, two tennis courts were converted to pickleball courts to meet the demand of this popular sport, according to the town.

West Hartford's recreation department said the playing surface is made of "post tension concrete" that is also found on the tennis, pickleball and basketball courts at Wolcott Park and Kennedy Park.

The pickleball courts are open from dawn to dusk on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Rules are posted on player protocols when people are waiting and pickleball utilizes a rotation system when all courts are full.
