Obituary: Ann Farrell Barrows, 86, of West Hartford

While teaching grammar school in West Hartford, she met John "Jack" Barrows at Barkhamsted Reservoir and they were married for 62 years.

Ann Farrell Barrows, 86, of West Hartford, CT passed away peacefully on Memorial Day, May 28, 2018 surrounded by loving family following a long illness. Born in Hartford, CT and residing there until 1942, she was the daughter of John and Ruth Farrell. She graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy and Central Connecticut State College with a B.A. in Grammar School Education.

While teaching grammar school in West Hartford, she met John “Jack” Barrows at Barkhamsted Reservoir, soon married in 1956 and lovingly for 62 years following the mantra during the course of each day saying to each other “I Love You.”

Ann lived in the same West Hartford house since 1942 raising five sons with her devoted husband. She is survived by Jack, and her sons, Steven and husband Martin Blair of Brooklyn, NY, Kenneth of Scarsdale, NY, Tom of Orange, VT, and John and wife Dr. Kelly Krueger of Mountain Lakes, NJ; her twin brother John Farrell and wife Enis of Avon, CT; nine grandchildren ages 31 years to eight months, Kenny, Ray, Andrew, Shannon, Blair, Pat, Lindsey, Tyler, and Bryant; and great-grandson, Ken. She is also survived by several cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews, and many close friends. Ann was preceded in death by her beloved son William in 2006.

Following raising her family, Ann began a second career at the Barrows Real Estate Company and then Hooker & Holcomb Company, retiring in 1999. A vivacious person with a wonderful sense of style, Ann loved antiques, classical music, East Beach, RI, gardening, knitting, playing bridge, politics, The American Flag, The Boston Red Sox, and keeping up with her ever-growing family. A devout Roman Catholic and Saint Peter Claver Parishioner, she is now reunited with Bill, awaiting us all.

Calling hours will be Thursday, May 31st 5 to 7 p.m. at the Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, 136 South Main St., West Hartford. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 1st at the Church of Saint Peter Claver, 47 Pleasant St., West Hartford. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. The family wishes to thank St. Francis Palliative Care Team for their gracious medical care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Charities, c/o Development Office, 839-841 Asylum Ave., Hartford, CT 06105.
