Obituary: Jonathan Douglin, 20: West Hartford Resident

Funeral arrangements have been set for Douglin, who was described by his family as having "the heart of a lion and was a gift from God."

Jonathan Stephen Douglin, 20, of West Hartford, beloved son of Sonia (Martell) and Richardo Douglin, passed away on Friday, January 1, 2016 at Hartford Hospital.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on November 4, 1995, he moved from the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, N.Y. to West Hartford with his family at the age of 3. Jonathan attended Charter Oak Elementary School, Sedgewick Middle School, and Conard High School in West Hartford.

A natural athlete, Jonathan played basketball, lacrosse and his favorite sport, football, while growing up in West Hartford. While growing up in West Hartford, Jonathan played football on the Titans, Raiders, and Conard High School teams and when he was at home he loved watching his favorite NFL team, the New England Patriots.

The youngest of five children, Jonathan was the baby of the family that everyone loved. He took care of his mother and was her best friend. His family always said that he had the heart of a lion and that he was a gift from God. He was very tough mentally and fearless, yet he was always, honest, loving, loyal, affectionate, and fair.

Jonathan was a quick learner and very smart, yet his siblings always joked with him for being so trusting and gullible. His family will miss his unforgettable sense of humor, his kindness, his easy-going nature, and his competitive spirit. His siblings were his best friends and enjoyed playing sports with him, Madden Football and other video games, and spending time with him at home. He attended Calvary Church in West Hartford with his family.

Besides his parents, he leaves to mourn his passing, two brothers, Richardo “Ricky” Douglin, Jr. and Matthew “Matt” Douglin both of West Hartford; two sisters, Nicole “Nick” Douglin and Kristine “Kris” Douglin both of West Hartford; his maternal grandmother, Cynthia Martell of Hartford; six aunts, Michelle Cameron of Springfield, N.J., Trudy Olafinboba and her husband Kola of Farmington, Collette Foote and her husband Garth of Hartford, Natalie Martell of Windsor, Donna Hanson and her husband Michael of Queens, N.Y., and Sharon Tweneboah of North Lauderdale, Fla.; six uncles, Vesley Martell and his wife Ivorine of West Hartford, Gary Martell and his wife Annette of West Hartford, Elliott Douglin and his wife Carmeta of Barbados, Pearson Douglin and his wife Dian of Wilmington, Delaware, David Douglin and his wife Cynthia of Marlboro, N.J., and Carlos Douglin of Barbados; his godmother, Donna Williams of Sayreville, N.J.; 21 cousins; and a host of other relatives and friends.

His family will receive friends on Thursday, January 7, 5-8 p.m., at Calvary Church, 1855 Albany Ave., West Hartford. His family will also receive friends on Friday, January 8, 10-11 a.m., followed by a Homegoing Service at 11 a.m., at Calvary Church, West Hartford.

The family has requested that in memory of Jonathan and the exemplary care that he provided for many years to his mother, donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 1463 Highland Ave., Cheshire, CT 06410.
