Obituary: Susan Lowry Winter, 90, of West Hartford

She was blessed with many friends to whom she was grateful for making a difference in her life.

Susan Lowry Winter, 90, formerly of Hickory Lane and more recently of the McAuley, both of West Hartford, CT died peacefully on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at home.

Susan was born January 14, 1926 in Syracuse, NY, the daughter of the late Dr. Paul Lowry and Margaret Ellithorp. She was a 1943 graduate of Walnut Hill School in Natick, MA and received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art History from Smith College, Northampton, MA in 1947. During her youth she discovered her love of music and played the piano. She enjoyed the outdoors, particularly horseback riding and ice skating. She spent many wonderful summers at Aloha Camp in Vermont as a camper and counselor.

Sue cherished her role as mother to her daughters, Margaret Carabillo and Katharine Winter. She loved them dearly and her son-in-law Vincent Carabillo. Her quiet support was always present. She was blessed with many friends to whom she was grateful for making a difference in her life. Sue lived her life by the Golden Rule. She was a thoughtful, kind and generous woman to everyone she met with a smile. She devoted herself to a variety of volunteer positions including over 15 years at the Visitors Information Center at the Old State House which she enjoyed immensely.

Sue savored life: Goodspeed, the Hartford Symphony, the Wadsworth, Tanglewood, Syracuse Football, UConn Huskies, Cape Cod, Maine and Connecticut Horticultural Society trips. Sue was predeceased by her daughter Margaret and is survived by her daughter Katharine and son-in-law Vincent. The family wishes to thank the caregivers and staff at the McAuley for their devotion and loving care.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 4, 2016 at Asylum Hill Congregational Church, 814 Asylum Avenue, Hartford. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions to a charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated.
