Obituary: Walter Oscar Ekwall, 94, of West Hartford

He was awarded a Lifetime Master Rating in competition from the NRA.

Walter Oscar Ekwall passed away Saturday, February 04, 2017 at Arden Court in Farmington at the age of 94.

He was the wonderful husband of Martha Carlson Ekwall for 63 years and the son of the late Oscar and Astrid Ekwall.

Walter was born August 10, 1922 in Hartford and lived in West Hartford before moving to Bloomfield 11 years ago. He graduated from Hall High School, Class of 1940, and served as a Navigation Flight Officer in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Walter earned an Engineering Degree from Hillyer College and worked as a machine designer with Pratt & Whitney Co. in West Hartford, retiring in 1984 after 38 years of service.

Walter was a member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts and the West Hartford Squires. He was a former member of the Bonsai Club, the P & W Pistol Club and the Metacon Gun Club. He was awarded a Lifetime Master Rating in competition from the NRA. Walter was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church where he had been an usher for over 50 years.

Besides his wife, Walter is survived by his two sons and their families, David, his wife Susan and children, Hillary, Brendan and Julia, and Robin, his wife Laurie and daughters, Kayla and Karissa. He was predeceased by his sister Ann Palmberg. He also leaves a niece June Nichols and two cousins, Evelyn Norris of Florida and Albert Carlson of Virginia.

There are no calling hours and a private service will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Emanuel Lutheran Church, 311 Capitol Ave., Hartford, CT 06106 or the CT Humane Society, 701 Russell Road, Newington, CT 06111.
