'The Odyssey' -- An Epic Dance Journey

Multi-Media Dance Production Based on Homer's "The Odyssey" at the University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford this October.

Prepare yourself for an epic dance production!

As part of their 25th anniversary season, Artistic Director Sonia Plumb and her Company of modern dance professionals bring a contemporary version of Homer’s “The Odyssey” to the Carol Autorino Center. “The Odyssey” is a multimedia feast for your senses — with dance, masks and costumes, lighting and scenic effects, video projections of underwater choreography and stage combat, and even original music.

“Mystical, electrifying and sensuous…an aesthetic adventure.”
— The Hartford Courant

Using modern dance as the medium to tell the theatrical tales of Odysseus’ travels home from the Trojan War, audience members will experience the wrath of Poseidon, traps of Cyclops, guidance from Athena, seduction of the Sirens, temptations by the Lotus Eaters, and challenges by Hades. Love, loyalty, courage, and cunning all keep Odysseus alive, as he makes his journey back home to Ithaca…and his loving wife Penelope.

And, as part of the Company’s “Prep Talk Series,” all performances are preceded by a 30-minute discussion in the second-floor reception room with a local educator about “The Odyssey” to bring audience members up to speed on Homer’s epic poem. This pre-show discussion will be led by Dr. James Shivers, Ph.D. from Hall High School in West Hartford.

Friday October 2 at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, October 3 at 7:30 p.m.
Sunday, October 4 at 3:00 p.m.

Pre show talks begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Audience members can also choose to skip the pre-show talk and just arrive for the 7:30 PM or 3:00 p.m. dance performances. (The piece is 75 minutes long and does not have an intermission.)
