Parents You Matter!

Over the many years that I have been a teacher, I have told parents countless times not to give up because their kids really are listening to them. Parents are the most important people in children’s lives, regardless of what their children may say, or not say. Hey, parents matter! And kids know it!

Now, all these years later as a parent, educator, and author, I now want to add something to what I used to tell parents when I was still a young teacher and not yet a parent myself. The thing I want to add to my updated advice is that our kids are not just listening to us because we’re the most important people in their lives, but they are also watching and learning from us, too because we are the most important people in their lives!

It’s true. We parents matter! Our kids are watching us and watching us closely because what we do really does matter. It matters a lot. And because of that, I am now challenging all of us parents to always be the role models that we’re all supposed to be. Come on… No more moments of weakness. Remember parents, we matter and so does what we do!

Let’s make this new beginning easy and just start with something small and simple that we can do for ourselves. Let’s just do one thing to improve the quality of our lives so that when our kids are listening, watching and learning from us, this one thing that we’re starting with can also positively influence them too! So, what can we do? Well, one of the simplest things we can do, as well as one of the most beneficial things for ourselves, is to get healthy by getting and staying in shape. And our kids will become healthier too!

Now as my Granddaddy always said, “Go learn, lead, and lay the way to a better world for all of us.” Parents never forget again that we matter and so does what we do. And once again parents, thanks in advance for all that you do, and all that you will do…
