Skin 101: Skin Protection from Sun Damage

Protect and Repair your Skin against Sun Damage!

Sun exposure can lead to changes in skin color (brown spots, red scaly spots), changes in texture and hydration (sunburns, wrinkles, and drying of skin) which all lead to premature aging of skin. It can also lead to the scariest complication of all- SKIN CANCER!!!

Ultraviolet rays are the culprits. If one does not have enough melanin- a protective skin pigment then these UV rays damage skin cells.

Even though we all know that skin protection is a necessity, we tend not to give it a priority in our daily routines, like brushing and flossing our teeth.

How does one protect against skin damage?

Sunscreen is necessary, at least SPF of 15. One in three cancers diagnosed in the U.S. is skin cancer! Apply Sunscreen at least 20 minutes before exposure, and should be reapplied every 2-3 hours. Use waterproof sunscreen if swimming, or sweating. Also, remember to cover ears and lips with SPF lip balm. Do not forget to cover feet as well if wearing sun-exposed shoes. Even on cold and cloudy days, ultraviolet rays still penetrate- do not forget to wear sunscreen. Use sunscreen whenever you are outside.

Avoid sunbathing and tanning beds!

How does one repair skin damage?

  1. Exfoliate with alpha hydroxyl acids- chemical exfoliation dissolves dead skin cells instead of just scrubbing them off
  2. Promote collagen production
  3. Repair sun damaged skin by addressing hyperpigmentation and coarse, uneven skin.

Repair skin damage by using products that contain hydroxyl acids (ex. glycolic acids), antioxidants (vitamin C, catechins, alpha lipoic acid), hyaluronic acid that moisturizes and peptides. These products improve collagen and elastin production, improve skin roughness and dryness, reduce wrinkle volume and depth, and promote a healthy skin glow with hydration.

There are many different ways to treat sun-damaged skin; a combination approach is the best. This includes a cleaning and moisturizing step as well as a daily sunscreen applied multiple times through the day.

Treat extensive skin damage and signs of premature aging with Hydrafacials & LED light treatment, which combines the above process with LED therapy & promotes healthy collagen and elastin growth. This treatment:

  1. Smoothens and textures skin
  2. Lightens dark spots
  3. Promotes collagen and elastin rejuvenation
  4. Promotes a healthy skin glow
