Sommer Promoted To West Hartford Town Engineer

West Hartford has a new town engineer and he's a familiar face.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — Greg Sommer has been named West Hartford's new town engineer, effective Monday.

He is a veteran of the town's planning and engineering initiatives.

Over the past 10 years at Sommer has implemented traffic improvements, coordinated utility projects, and designed major road/intersection improvement projects, including co-designing the Interstate 84-Park Road interchange. In addition, he has prepared many successful grant applications to fund public infrastructure projects including several sections of the Trout Brook Trail, developed the town's bicycle network, and played a key role in the implementation to the expanded outdoor dining initiative.

"I am excited about this opportunity and look forward to continuing to serve the town of West Hartford in my new role," Sommer said. "My predecessor Mr. Duane Martin, who was recently promoted to Director of the Department of Community Development, has done a terrific job of leading a very talented and hardworking team in the Engineering Division. I will his continue his good work. In the years ahead, our team will work on improving the storm drainage system, implement complete streets and traffic calming measures, and improve sidewalk and pavement conditions, along with other goals.”

Acting Town Manager Rick Ledwith said, "We are thrilled to announce Greg as our town engineer. Greg has already demonstrated a strong work ethic and dedication to West Hartford through his work as assistant town engineer and we know that his experience and knowledge of our public infrastructure, as well as his commitment to our community, will make him tremendous asset to the town as he moves into his role as town engineer.”

Martin said, "I am very proud of Greg and pleased that he will be the next town engineer. Greg's successful project track record, leadership qualities, professionalism, and dedication will serve him well in this new role. I look forward to working with Greg and his Engineering Division to improve the community for many years to come.”

Sommer joined the Town of West Hartford’s Engineering Division in January 2012 as a civil engineer. He was promoted to Assistant Town Engineer in July 2019.

Prior to joining the Town of West Hartford, Mr. Sommer worked in the public sector for Los Angeles County Department of Public Works. He moved to Connecticut in 2006 and spent six years working for private consulting firms before returning to public service.

Sommer has a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Syracuse University, a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from California State University, Los Angeles and is a licensed Connecticut Professional Engineer.

Sommer enjoys home improvement projects, theatrical scene design, watching sports, and, of course, spending quality time with his wife Katie and their two young daughters.
