Summertime Concerns At West Hartford Food Pantry

The local food pantry said donations often plummet in the summer and, with shelves bare, it is asking for donations from the public to help.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — Local social services officials are concerned about an expected decline in donations for the town's food pantry this summer and they're asking for the public's help.

"Donations to the West Hartford Food Pantry typically decline this time of year and will continue to decrease throughout the summer, creating a challenge for the families we serve," wrote the town Friday.

"The Town of West Hartford appreciates our community's continued support in stocking the food pantry shelves so we can help our neighbors experiencing food insecurity."

As a result, the town is asking folks to donate several items to stock the shelves and get the pantry through the warm-weather months.

The West Hartford Food Pantry said it especially needs the following items: cereal; canned fruit (15 oz); canned soup (19 oz); ravioli (15 oz); and spaghetti (16 oz).

The pantry cannot accept open and/or expired items.

The Stop & Shop supermarkets at 1235 Farmington Ave. and 176 Newington Road have donation bins as you exit the stores.

Donations can also be left on the carts in the West Hartford Town Hall lobby, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The town hall is located at 50 S. Main St., West Hartford.

For larger donations, the carts may be taken to a vehicle and then returned to the lobby.
