Wealth Management Group of North America Titans 36 - Law offices of Walter Hussey Giants 32

In a repeat of last year’s championship game the Titans and the Giants again faced off to determine the 2011 WHYFL Championship. After winning the coin toss, the Titans chose to defer and kicked off to the Giants. The short kick was mishandled and the Titans gained the opening possession. Two plays later, Griffin Smith sprang loose for a 28 yard touchdown run. Both teams then battled but gained no ground as the remainder of the quarter was scoreless.

The Giants then proceeded on a long drive which brought them to a first and goal on the Titan 1 yard line. But the Titans defense stopped the Gmen cold and the Titans took over on their own 2 yard line. Behind some terrific blocking by Carter Horton, Chris Reynolds, Brian Renker and Zander Boehm, the Titans gave the ball again to Griffin Smith who scored on a long 58 yard scamper. The Giants wasted no time after receiving the following kick; they ran it all the way to the end zone for the Giants first score of the game. Again the Titans rallied adding two more scores before the half ended. Another by Smith and the forth on a short pass to Kevin Manning leaving the score at half time 24 - 6.

The Titans opening possession of the second half was met by the stout Giant defense which forced a punt on downs. Then the gritty Giants began moving the ball and scored as their offensive line began to take control. The Titans, with plenty of fight left, followed with their own drive and this time Max Main scored on quarterback keeper. The next series by the Giants produced another quick score and at this point it seemed the momentum turned in the Giants favor. The Giants proceeded to score on their next possession, narrowing the Titans lead.

In the closing minutes the Titans needed to run time off the clock. They did just that as the moved the ball down the field. With 4th and 3 to go, the Titans went to a hard count and forced the Giants to jump off sides which gave the Titans the first down they needed. Then Cameron Wilson scored on a 20-yard run sealing the win for the Titans.

Key to the Titan’s win were big plays by Titan veterans. Kevin Manning led the team in tackles. Max Main, Dario Laraia, Griffin Smith, Cullen McCaffery, and Cameron Wilson were close behind. In the secondary, Shea Friedman, David Torres, Joey Lemieux, and Matt Schwab helped in coverage. Max Leyland stepped in big a back up quarterback, while the line play was strengthened by Gavin Klett, Aarik Rochester, and Jimmy Sabia.

It was a hard-fought battle by two worthy teams who never relented in a game fitting a league championship.
