Two West Hartford High School Seniors Earn Prestigious Scholarship
The students were among a few in Connecticut to get a National Merit Scholarship Award.
WEST HARTFORD, CT — Two high school seniors in West Hartford were named winners of prestigious $2,500 scholarships, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corp. Tuesday.
According to the Evanston, Ill.,-based organization, Thatcher W. Slocum of Conard High School in West Hartford earned a scholarship.
He is expected to embark on a career in materials engineering.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Tang Zhao, a senior at West Hartford's Hall High School, earned a scholarship as well.
She plans to study to become an electrical engineer.

The merit scholar designees were chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 finalists in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Winners are judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in college.
Scholars were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors.
NMSC is a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance and was founded in 1955 to conduct the National Merit Scholarship Program.
The majority of scholarships are underwritten by approximately 340 independent corporate
and college sponsors.
