WH PZC OK's Art Group's Parking Lot Lighting Plan

The goal of the proposal is the safely light the parking lot for night events, while not being a hindrance to neighbors.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — A local art organization recently received town approval that will allow it to improve safety outside its headquarters during night events.

Following some delays, the West Hartford Plan and Zoning Commission last week unanimously approved plans for the West Hartford Art League to install new lighting in its parking lot.

The group will erect a 15-foot pole with special timed lighting for its parking lot, something the organization says is necessary to improve safety at night events at the 37 Buena Vista Road facility.

The parking lot, however, is located across the street from the organizations art gallery building, with an address of 87 Mountain Road.

The goal is for a well-lit parking lot that still isn't too bright to cause any distractions for adjacent property owners.

As a result, the PZC approval came with some conditions, including: the lighting fits in with the neighborhood; the lighting won't hinder any development in the area; driveways, ingress and egress are achieving "maximum safety"; the parking lot lighting turns off at 10 p.m.; and the applicant returns to the PZC in October 2024 to check back regarding compliance.

The 88-year-old West Harford Art League is a nonprofit organization aimed at educating and displaying the work of local artists, among many programs.
