West Hartford Cops Hosting Halloween Event

WEST HARTFORD, CT — The West Hartford Police Department will be hosting a drive-up trick-or-treating event at police headquarters (103 Raymond Road) on Halloween from 4 to 7 p.m.

Officers will be handing out candy, treats and reflective wear. Police vehicles will be on display.

On Halloween night, West Hartford Police Department on-duty patrol vehicles will have their cruise lights on as a reminder to motorists that children will be out.

Drivers are being encouraged to make extra efforts not to be distracted. West Hartford Officers are already involved in the DOT Fall Distracted Driving High Visibility Enforcement Campaign and are strictly enforcing distracted driving laws.

Sunset is projected for 6:39 p.m. — prime time for younger trick-or-treaters.

Trick-or-treaters should stay on the sidewalk and cross at intersections and walk with an adults, police said. Police said stay in well-lit areas and walk against traffic if in the road, police said. Trick-or-treaters should carry a flashlight or even illuminated Halloween decorations and wear reflective safety wear or even glow sticks to help with visibility, police said.

Other safety precautions are:

• If you’re sick- don’t hand out candy.
• Stay in groups while going house to house.
• Only go to well-lit residences – never go into a home or apartment. Use caution with masks or costumes that may block vision.
• Use caution with costumes that present trip hazards.
• Clear your property of trip hazards and provide safe walkway lighting. Make sure pets are secure from all of the extra excitement of visitors.
• Don’t eat anything until it has been thoroughly inspected by an adult. If you see suspicious behavior call police to report it right away.
