The town is seeking to double the previous year's collection, which diverted 33,000 pounds of pumpkins from the trash to biofuel.

Its announcement warns that pumpkins put in the trash produce environmentally harmful methane and increase the town's waste disposal costs.

Residents should remove all plastic bags, trash, and other recyclables before dropping off pumpkins.

The town also instructs residents not to feed pumpkins to the farm animals at Westmoor Park.
