$101K Approved To Move West Hartford Emergency Communications Equipment

The move is temporary to facilitate roof project at The Hartford, which is where the equipment is located.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — How can a roof project at a Hartford insurance company impact emergency communications in a neighboring town?

If that town utilizes that rooftop for antennas and emergency communications equipment, it can prompt a bit of scrambling to ensure emergency needs are met.

That's the case for the Town of West Hartford, whose town council earlier this month approved spending $101,120 to move its emergency equipment that was on the roof of a Hartford building.

The actual vote was part of a consent agenda that was unanimously approved and the expenditure will come from the 2022-23 general fund budget.

According to information regarding the resolution to appropriate the cash, which was done at the Sept. 13 West Hartford Town Council meeting, the town operates the equipment on the roof of The Hartford, which is located at 960 Asylum St., Hartford.

But the insurance giant is looking to replace the roof of its building and it was expected to begin work toward that end on Monday.

As a result, The Hartford requested the town temporarily relocate the equipment to a lower deck during the project, albeit on a temporary basis.

This results in no disruptions of service to emergency responders in West Hartford.

"This communications equipment plays an important role in public safety and emergency operations and any reduction in coverage for an extended period of time would impede those operations," reads the approved resolution.
