West Hartford to Open New 'Green' Recycling Center

The town will host a grand re-opening event on Saturday to celebrate its redesigned, consumer-friendly recycling center.

The Town of West Hartford announced Wednesday that it is hosting a ribbon cutting ceremony and grand re-opening event on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 11 a.m. to celebrate its redesigned, consumer-friendly Recycling Center.

West Hartford has partnered with Supreme Forest Products (Supreme), Southern New England’s largest producer of mulch, compost and top soil, to enhance the town’s Yard Waste and Recycling Center.

“There was no better company to match our vision of where we want to take our materials management process in the future” John Philips, DPW for the Town of West Hartford, said in a press release.

In an effort to transition from waste management to organics management, the West Hartford facility, located at 25 Brixton Street, has undergone significant site improvements to create a safer, cleaner, more state-of-the-art green recycling center that will provide increased convenience and a more consumer–friendly environment for residents and local contractors.

Once dropping off their green waste, West Hartford residents will be able to pick up quality mulch, compost, top soil and decorative stone to beautify their businesses and homes all in one trip.

“The Town of West Hartford has been a great partner from the beginning because of its service-oriented and environmentally conscious mindset,” said Supreme’s General Manager Martin Paganini. “We are looking forward to continuing to evolve with the Town, responding to its citizens’ desire to have more recycling options.”

With more than 33 years’ experience in managing green waste, Supreme offers municipalities a complete solution to the collection, management and disposal of yard waste. Their full service operation and management of the 11-acre facility is the first of many steps to enhance the Town of West Hartford’s forward-thinking approach to handling waste.

Next steps for the facility, while still in discussion stages, include accepting increased organic waste streams, such as food waste, and making more improvements to the site to free up space to offer more consumer services and products.
