West Hartford Police Department Introduces New Officers

Several new faces have joined the WHPD.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — Five new officers for the West Hartford Police Department were sworn in Wednesday.

The ceremony took place at the Town Hall Auditorium.

Scott Smith (Badge 447), grew up in Vernon and attended Howell Cheney Technical High School in Manchester. He then went on to earn a bachelor's degree in Sociology, with a focus on Criminal Justice, from Eastern Connecticut State University. His first law enforcement position was with the East Hartford Police Department. He has spent the past 21 years with the Connecticut State Police, climbing the ranks and retiring with a rank of Major. Smith is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy, an executive leadership program offered to law enforcement professionals. Scott resides in Tolland with his family.

Zachary Berbereia (Badge 448), grew up in Visalia, Calif., where he graduated from EL Diamante High School. He attended the local community college, College of the Sequoias and transferred to California State University, Fresno. He graduated from Fresno State with his B.S. in criminology. Shortly after graduation he moved to Connecticut with his fiancé and started working for Lowes while pursuing a career in Law Enforcement.

Evan Riley (Badge 449), grew up in Glastonbury, where he attended Glastonbury High School. Upon graduation he attended the University of New Haven pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice with a Minor in Sociology and a concentration in Investigative Services. After completing his undergraduate coursework there he soon continued his studies and is now pursuing a master’s degree in Homeland Security with a Concentration in Cybersecurity and will also receive a graduate certificate in Intelligence from Tulane University. Riley has also participated in internships with the New Haven Police Department Narcotics and Intelligence Unit, as well as with SafeAbroad as a Global Security Intelligence Analyst.

Mohammed Alvi Hossain (Badge 450), grew up in the Queens borough of New York City. Both he and his younger brother are children of immigrant parents from Bangladesh. He attended Brooklyn Technical High School in NY then went on to attend the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice in 2017. While in college, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps with his brother. Graduating from both boot camp at Parris Island and the School of Infantry in 2019, he returned home to begin his reserve duty status. Shortly after his return, he began his pursuit of a career in law enforcement.
