West Hartford School Nutrition Services Goes Beyond the Cafeteria

Provides Healthy Snacks to Students at HANOC

The West Hartford School Nutrition Services, which serves healthy and nourishing meals to more than 5,000 students daily, recently visited the Hillcrest Area Neighborhood Outreach Center (HANOC) to provide a healthy snack to the children who participate in the student homework program at the center, all in an effort to reach out to students beyond the school cafeterias.

Cafeteria staff from all of West Hartford’s sixteen (16) schools contributed to the cause, which provided fresh-made yogurt and fruit parfaits and granola bars to more than fifty (50) students.

“Every day we serve healthy and nutritious meals in our school lunchrooms, but often, these students go to after-school activities and need that afternoon snack, as well,” said Sharon Riley, Area Manager for West Hartford Nutrition Services, who is credited with coming up with the idea.

“Working closely with HANOC was wonderful because we were able to provide a healthy snack for these students,” added Trish Molloy, Food Service Director for West Hartford Public Schools, and active member and past president for the School Nutrition Association of Connecticut (SNACT.) “Our passion for providing nutritious meals does not end once the school day does.”

The balance of the funds collected was donated to the center for supplies and snacks needed as the program continues.
