West Hartford Teacher Charged With Sexually Assaulting Pupil: Police

The 47-year-old Thomaston resident was taken into custody Thursday after a DCF tip alerted West Hartford police last month.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — A Thomaston man and teacher at a private day school in West Hartford has been charged with inappropriately touching a juvenile student, police said.

According to the West Hartford Police Department Friday, Roger Katz, 47, was taken into custody Thursday and charged with fourth-degree sexual assault by a school employee where the victim is under 16; risk of injury to a child; and second-degree breach of peace.

Katz, police said, is a teacher at the New England Jewish Academy, 300 Bloomfield Ave., West Hartford.

Police said the investigation of Katz came after the state Department of Children and Families notified them of the allegations on June 6.

"Immediately upon receiving the complaint, an investigation was initiated by the West Hartford Police Detective Division," wrote the WHPD Friday.

"After a thorough investigation, an arrest warrant was sought charging the suspect with a variety of criminal violations."

Police said Katz was being held on $200,000 bond pending a court appearance in Hartford Superior Court on Friday.
