WEST HARTFORD, CT — If people can order lunch, Christmas gifts and event tickets online, it only stands to reason more mundane activities — like municipal building permits — can be done so as well.

Starting Monday, Dec. 5, in West Hartford, those doing business with the town can do just that — get what they need through the touch of a few computer keys.

"The Town of West Hartford is excited to launch its new CityView online permitting system," wrote town officials via social media.

"The new system is expected to streamline the permitting process by correcting common errors that can stall the start of a project. Common errors include missing documentation and site plans and a miscalculation of fees."

Beginning Monday, permit applicants will be required to use new CityView Online Portal for all submissions. Paper applications will no longer be accepted.

CityView online permitting can be used for building permits, zoning permits and engineering permits.

The online permitting process begins by creating a user name and password.

Users can log on and work on the permit over a period of time.

Information is saved after each visit so users can pick-up where they previously left off.

Electronic documents can be uploaded and fees are automatically and correctly calculated.

Users complete the transaction with a credit card. Once the permit is submitted, users can log on and track its progress.

A history of all permits are kept in the user's account.

For those who still prefer to show up at West Hartford Town Hall to do their business, a computer kiosk is available in each of the three offices so people can apply for a permit in person.

"Staff are happy to assist and answer questions," wrote the town.
