West Hartford Urges Textile Recycling

Old, worn textiles can be dropped off at the town's recycling center on Brixton Street.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — The town public works division that oversees recycling in town is urging residents this week to recycle items beyond just metals and plastics.

West Hartford Recycles, located in the West Hartford Department of Public Works office, 17 Brixton St., said folks should also think about recycling textiles.

Namely, people might want to consider those clothing items that are too worn for clothing drives or for wearing themselves.

Those items, local recycling officials said, still have some use.

"Rather than toss those old socks, ratty T-shirts, and torn sheets in the trash, consider collecting a bag full and dropping them in the textile bin at the Yard Waste and Recycling Center," wrote West Hartford Recycles this week.

The recycling center is located nearby at 25 Brixton St.

Town reccyling officials said about 15 percent of textiles are recycled and they'd like to see that percentage increase, pointing out there are uses for old textiles.

"We can do better," wrote the town. "Recycled textiles are turned into carpet pads, pet beds and many other useful items."
