Taylor Modeen Funeral Home Threshers Outlast the Gent Financial Group Rivercats
The Threshers and Rivercats battled it out in a game that was much closer than the final score indicated. The Threshers rallied late in the game to gain the 10-0 victory. Things started with a great pitching duel between Teddy Keegan of the Rivercats and Drew Seidman of the Threshers. Keegan went three strong innings holding the Threshers to only one run while striking out four. However, Seidman was strong for the Threshers throwing two shutout innings with three K's. Seidman was aided by his defense as catcher Jacob Newbury threw out a would-be base stealer. Newbury's threw a one-hop bullet to second that beat the runner and shortstop Dylan Heinen made a beautiful pick up and tag to record the out. Heinen also came on to pitch the third and fourth and continued the shutout streak retiring the side in both innings with 4 strikeouts. The Rivercats also got strong pitching from their bullpen as Cohl D'Addabbo came on and was throwing smoke. However, the Threshers made adjustments in the fifth and mounted their best rally of the day. A few walks set the stage for Seidman (4-4, 4 RBI, 3 runs) who came up with the bases loaded to deliver the big blow of the game - a bases-clearing double to left field. Jude Sargent followed with an RBI double but then the rally looked like it might stall as Rivercats outfielder Sam Kamm made a great running catch of a line drive to right center off the bat of Ethan Raisner. Jacob Newbury (3-3, 2 RBI) then came through again as he did earlier in the game with a big two-out RBI hit. The Threshers tacked on 3 more in the sixth behind hits from Dylan Romano, Brian Chelli, Seidman and Robert Schunder (3-3, 2 RBI, run). Schunder closed the door in the fifth and sixth striking out four to seal the win.
Harry's Pizza Bats Beat Dick's Sporting Goods Grasshoppers 7-0.
There were no sticky situations for the Bats' pitchers as Joe Hussey (7K) and Dan Hussey (8K) held the Grasshoppers hitless. Offensively, it was a team effort by the Bats with clutch hitting by Patrick McGann, Jackson Muskrat, Jack Kuhnly, and Devon Barnum and extra base rips from Brian Namnoum and Dan Hussey.
The well coached Grasshoppers played impressive defense and executed relays with major league precision. The highlights were a diving catch by first baseman Matthew DeLutrie who threw a strike to home for a double play as catcher Jonathan Morrey skillfully made the tag. Also, second baseman Jack Correia made an accurate throw to the plate to snag a Bats' base runner.
Friday, June 1:
Taylor Modeen Funeral Home Threshers Squeak Past the Cow Parade Bulls 4-3.
Two top teams were at the top of their games as the Threshers edged the Bulls 4-3 on Friday night at Eisenhower Park. Great pitching and great defense were on display from both sides. Brady Tober started for the Bulls and was throwing strong over 3 innings, striking out 8. After striking out the first two batters of the game, the Threshers got a walk and 3 singles in a row to push across the first run. Jude Sargent (1-2, 1 RBI) had a big 2-out single to score Drew Seidman. In the bottom half of the inning, the Bulls loaded the bases off of Seidman with two outs. The next batter hit a smash to third base, but Ethan Raisner made a slick play on the ball to get the force out and end the threat. The Bulls were back at it in the second inning getting the first two runners aboard, but Seidman managed to strike out the side to again escape trouble. In the top of the third, the Threshers mounted a rally. Josh Liebman was hit by the pitch and Dylan Heinen walked to set the stage for Robert Schunder (2-3, 1 run, 2 RBI) who laced a double to left-center scoring both runners. Schunder later scored on an RBI groundout from Dylan Romano. The Bulls answered right back in their half of the inning as Cooper Silver and Brett Berman walked to bring up Will Fox (2-2, 2 RBI, 1 run). Fox ripped a double to the fence in right center to score two runs. Seidman struck out the next batter before giving way to Dylan Heinen. Harry Stevenson hit a roller to third and raced down the line to beat out the throw allowing Fox to score from third. The next batter then hit a short pop-up in front of the plate and collided with Thresher catcher Sargent who was diving for the ball. Quickly, Heinen, who was also charging in, grabbed the ball and fired to first to end the inning. The rest of the game was all about pitching and defense. Will Fox came on for the Bulls and shut down the Threshers over 3 innings striking out 5 and leaving runners stranded on third two different times. The Threshers, however, matched the Bulls' pitching as Heinen pitched a scoreless fourth. After a leadoff single by Joseph Shuey, Heinen helped himself by charging off the mound to field a beautiful bunt by Tobey Siegel, throwing down to first for the out. On the play, the Bulls' baserunner made an aggressive turn from third and headed home. First baseman Schunder alertly fired a strike to the catcher Sargent who absorbed the collision to apply the tag for the 1-3-2 double play. Schunder then came on to pitch the fifth and sixth. After striking out the side in the fifth, Schunder saw the tying run reach on a walk. Fox came up to the plate and lined another would-be hit to right-center, but outfielder Brooks McConnell (back after a long injury lay-off) charged the ball and threw a bullet to second base to force out the runner. Two batters later, the Bulls had runners on first and third but Schunder coaxed a ground out to Seidman at short who flipped to Heinen at second to end the game.
