WEST HARTFORD, CT — If the symbol of the holiday season is a Christmas tree standing tall and fully decorated, then the symbol of January is an empty tree lying on its side by the road.

And with Christmas behind us, the Town of West Hartford, starting Tuesday, Jan. 2, will be hauling away those remnants of yuletide joy.

Local officials Friday announced the town's Christmas tree collection policy, with West Hartford Department of Public Works staff collecting them from Tuesday, Jan. 2, to Friday, Jan. 12, 2024.

Crews will begin in the Tuesday trash collection area and continue into the Wednesday area, and so on, according to the town.

West Hartford officials said they will make two complete sweeps through town during the two weeks.

Residents are encouraged to put their trees at the curb (not in the street) on any day during the first week of collection to ensure pick-up.

Crews may get ahead of schedule, weather permitting, and move into the next collection area.

Condominium and association residents should check with their associations or management companies as these collection times vary.

During the final week of collection, Jan. 8-Jan. 12, trees must be at the curb by 6 a.m. on the designated trash day.

Drivers cannot return for trees put out after your trash day.

Trees are recycled into wood chips, so folks should remove all decorations and lights. (No artificial trees. No bags.)

Please help us during snowstorms by removing trees from the side of the road. Crews cannot dig out trees buried under snow.

Residents can also bring their trees to the town’s recycling center at 25 Brixton Center. The winter hours of operation are Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. (No weekend hours until April.) An annual permit is required.
