WEST HAVEN, CT — A local resident is accused of stealing more than $39,000 in funds which were intended to benefit local high school sports teams, according to police.
Salvatore Carfora, 55, of West Haven, has been charged on a warrant with first-degree larceny, police announced Wednesday.
Police said they launched an investigation after receiving a fraud complaint about Facebook “cash wheel” events run by Carfora.
The events were conducted between August 2020 and May 2022, according to police.
“These events were purportedly organized to benefit the West Haven High School hockey team and other high school sports programs,” police said, in the announcement.
Police said investigators determined more than $39,000 collected through these events had been misappropriated. The high school sports teams never received the benefits which were advertised to “cash wheel” participants, according to police.
