WEST HAVEN, CT — A New York couple is accused of staging an armed robbery in West Haven and claiming that more than $70,000 worth of jewelry was stolen from the woman, according to police.
The incident happened in December when police responded to a parking lot on Elm Street on the report of an armed robbery.
The victim told police that she was robbed at gunpoint of all her jewelry. Detectives also responded to the scene and took over the investigation, according to police.
Police said days later, the victim gave detectives appraisals for the jewelry she claimed was stolen from her with a total cost of more than $70,000.
“Throughout this lengthy 4-month investigation, Detectives identified inconsistencies in the statements originally provided by the victim and her husband regarding how the incident occurred,” police wrote in a news release. “At the conclusion of this investigation, Detectives determined that the reported robbery had been staged by the female complainant and her husband.”
Detectives obtained arrest warrants for both the woman and her husband, and police said they turned themselves in on Thursday, May 21.
Eunice Blakey, 47, of New York, was charged with insurance fraud and conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny.
Reginald Blakey, 46, of New York, formerly of New Haven, was charged with insurance fraud and conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny.
Police said they were both released after posting bond with a court date of June 18.
