“The quality of bathing water is measured by the presence of organisms that may indicate the presence of potentially harmful bacteria,” officials wrote in a news release. “Every week, water samples are taken from nine different bathing areas throughout the city of West Haven. These samples are then sent to the state laboratory to be evaluated for elevated levels of bacteria. These results along with the State of Connecticut’s guidelines for bathing water quality are used to determine if an advisory needs to be posted or a bathing area needs to be closed. The West Haven Health Department continuously monitors these nine sites and will remove these postings and reopen beaches when bacteria levels are safe for bathing.”
