Convicted Felon Arrested On Gun Charges After Fleeing From Police: West Haven PD

WEST HAVEN, CT — A convicted felon was arrested on gun charges after fleeing from police during an attempted traffic stop Saturday night in West Haven, according to police.

Members of the West Haven Police Department Street Crime Unit were conducting an investigation in the area of Campbell Avenue and Elm Street around 9:40 p.m. on July 25.

During the investigation, police said the Street Crime Unit requested assistance from the Patrol Division to conduct a motor vehicle stop of a black Mercedes sedan in the area.

Police said the driver fled from the attempted traffic stop at a high rate of speed heading north on Campbell Avenue.

An officer on Campbell Avenue successfully deployed a tire deflation device that disabled both front tires on the Mercedes, according to police.

Despite the damaged tires, police said the vehicle continued onto I-95 South via the Campbell Avenue entrance ramp before becoming disabled in the area of Exit 42.

Police said the driver, identified as 35-year-old Rean Session of New Haven, then got out of the vehicle and ran away.

Inside the Mercedes, police said officers located a loaded Sig Sauer handgun that was discarded by Session.

Officers apprehended Session a short distance away without further incident, according to police.

“The discarded firearm was recovered and found to have an altered serial number,” police wrote in a news release. “It was also equipped with an extended magazine containing 17 rounds of 9mm ammunition, with an additional round chambered. The investigation revealed that Session is a convicted felon and is prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition.”

Session was charged with criminal possession of a firearm, criminal possession of ammunition, possession of a high capacity magazine, illegal alteration of a firearm, engaging police in pursuit, reckless driving, misuse of registration, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, failure to insure a private passenger motor vehicle, and interfering with an officer / resisting arrest.
