Driver, Officers Hospitalized After Vehicle Goes Into Water In West Haven: Police

Officers went to remove the occupant after a vehicle went into the water, according to police.

WEST HAVEN, CT — A driver and several police officers were hospitalized after a vehicle went into the water off a dead-end street in West Haven, according to police.

Police advised motorists to avoid the area of Roberts Street and Ocean Avenue during the incident.

Police said officers arrived and immediately entered the water to remove the single occupant.

He was later taken to the hospital for further assistance, according to police.

Police said all officers who entered the water were also taken to the hospital for evaluation as a precaution.

The vehicle reportedly went over a high cliff and a seawall before going into the water.

Mayor Dorinda Borer said crews responded to a 911 call reporting that a vehicle that went airborne at Roberts Street and went into the ocean and was submerging.

"Our West Haven Police and Fire immediately jumped into action holding the car up to pull the driver out and render aid," Borer wrote in a post on Facebook. "Incredible work by all. The condition of the driver is serious and PD were transported for evaluation of minor injuries.

"The cause of the incident is under investigation."

WTNH News 8 reports first responders had to break windows and the windshield to get the driver out of the vehicle. He was taken to the hospital in serious condition, according to WTNH.
