West Haven, CT — The West Haven Police Department shared some good news on Wednesday evening with the update that injured Officer Mike Doyle has shown “remarkable improvement” in his recovery from a serious motorcycle accident on June 22.

Doyle, 34, has been hospitalized in the intensive care unit after being seriously injured in a crash on the Taconic State Parkway while participating in a motorcycle training class with the Yonkers, N.Y. Police Department.

“Hopefully, soon he will be able to return to Connecticut for continued care,” police said in a Facebook post. “We thank all of you who have sent cards, well wishes, thoughts and prayers for Mike and his family.”

Doyle, an eight-year member of the department, was launched from his motorcycle onto the pavement when he was struck by a vehicle merging onto the parkway. He was participating in the training exercise with about 25 other police motorcycles.

Doyle, who police said is an experienced motorcycle rider, was transported by a Life Star helicopter to Westchester Medical Center.

Doyle is a big Captain America fan and the West Haven Police Department pinned a photo of Captain America’s shield on the Facebook page soon after he was injured.

Many community members then changed their Facebook profile photos to the shield in honor of Doyle.

The Yonkers Police Department recently produced and published a video on the training course that took place over a two-week period and dedicated it to Doyle.

“This video is dedicated to West Haven PD Police Officer Mike Doyle who was seriously injured during this school,” the intro reads on YouTube. “Mike is still recovering and he is a big Captain America fan. Thank you PO (Peter) Mullen for using your Go Pro and dedicating this video to Mike.”
