Longtime Notre Dame-West Haven Football Coach Retires

Tom Marcucci will remain as the school's athletic director, Notre Dame-West Haven announced on Wednesday.

WEST HAVEN, CT — Longtime Notre Dame-West Haven football coach Tom Marcucci has announced his retirement as coach but will remain as the school’s athletic director.

Marcucci’s 25-year career as head coach came to an end with Notre Dame’s 20-17 loss to New Canaan in the CIAC Class L semifinals on Monday night.

Marcucci, who informed his players in the week leading up to the Green Bowl on Thanksgiving that this season would be his last, has been involved with the football program in some capacity for 43 of the last 47 years.

In his 25 years as head coach, the Green Knights compiled a 179-82-6 record, qualified for the postseason nine times, and won two state titles (1991 and 2009), while coaching 41 all-State players and sending countless players to the collegiate level.

“I knew before the season that this would be my last one,” Marcucci said in a news release from the school. “Only my coaches and family were aware as I did not want it to be a distraction to this year’s team. It was their year, not mine. It is just time, as coaching is a young man’s job and I no longer really fit that description. I am forever grateful to my coaching staff for allowing me to continue for so long.”
