“I’m looking to be part of the community,” said May, owner of HerSoul, which looks to open at the now defunct Peroles location in February. “I really want this to be a family restaurant.”

May knows that there is a stigma attached to the location that she is first going to have to overcome. Peroles acquired a less-than-desirable reputation with some neighborhood residents who felt the restaurant had transitioned from food service to nightclub over the years which they feel contributed to an increase in violence and alcohol related incidents in the area. The city eventually ordered Peroles closed after it was determined the restaurant had gone outside of its conditions of approval by hosting regular late night events and live entertainment.
