Notre Dame Welcomes Home Mrs. Kathy Matthews as Skills Center Coordinator

West Haven -- Mrs. Kathy Matthews is no stranger to Notre Dame. The mother of three recent graduates, including Kameron ‘16, was recently hired as the Rita Benney Skills Center Coordinator.

Matthews, who has a Bachelor of Science in Special Education from Southern Connecticut State University and is also certified by the State of Connecticut as a Nursing Assistant, comes to Notre Dame with almost 10 years of public school experience in the Fairfield and Seymour school districts.

“We are thrilled to add Kathy to our staff,” said Notre Dame President Mr. Robert F. Curis. “Her obvious history and knowledge of Notre Dame combined with her prior experience will benefit the students who need her tutelage.”

At Notre Dame, Kathy will be responsible for offering strategies and techniques through student-centered programs for those with learning disabilities. Among her other duties, Matthews will monitor students with service plans, provide academic support, and address the academic concerns of our students.

She will also preside over strategies for learning workshops, serve as a reference in implementing strategies to accommodate various learning styles, and work collaboratively with the Guidance Department and faculty for student success.

“I am extremely excited to be a part of the Notre Dame faculty,” said Matthews. “The mission of Father Basil Moreau of educating hearts as well as minds have always been part of my teaching style and I look forward to working with students to cultivate their own gifts.”

As a special education teacher in both Fairfield and Seymour, Matthews was responsible for student individualized education plans according to state and federal guidelines, collaborating with general education staff and faculty, managing paraprofessionals, coordination of all related services as well as case management for students under her care as well as other responsibilities.

Matthews, whose other sons include 2011 graduate Kristopher and 2013 graduate Kolin, fully immersed herself in the Notre Dame community starting when Kristopher began his freshman year in the fall of 2007. She rose to the position of Notre Dame Parent-Teacher Club President from 2010-2016, while also helping with the school’s annual Grand Knight Auction from 2011-2016.
