Obituary: Adam F. Berluti, 87; Formerly of West Haven

Adam F. Berluti, 87, formerly of West Haven and Branford entered into rest on Wednesday May 6, 2020. Blessed with three loving families, he was born to Antonio and Valburga (Morini) Berluti on October 20, 1932 in Revere, Mass and was raised by Pasquale and Guiseppina Berluti and Vincent and Amalia Berluti in New Haven and West Haven, Conn.

Adam graduated from West Haven high school in 1951 where he played football and became a star quarterback. This earned him a scholarship to attend Colby College in Waterville, Maine. Adam graduated from Colby College with a B.A. degree in Economics in 1955 and then attended UConn where he earned a M. A. degree in English in 1957 and worked as a graduate assistant English instructor. He would later return to UConn to earn credits toward a M. A. degree in Economics.

Adam also served in the Army for two years as an Intelligence analyst, stationed in Naples, Italy. After returning from military service, he attended Yale University Summer Language Institute in 1960 and ‘61 to study Italian and French.

Adam’s educational background provided him with some unique employment opportunities. He served in the Legislative Reference Services – Economics Division, Library of Congress in Washington D.C. as an Economic Analyst. Adam researched and wrote speeches, economic reports and position statements on proposed legislation for U.S. Congressmen and received many letters of gratitude from the Congressmen he helped.

Adam held a position with DMS, Inc. Division of McGraw Hill as an editor compiling and editing market intelligence reports on Federal environmental programs. He also edited and translated articles for foreign affairs news services.

Up until his retirement, Adam served over 18 years in the Connecticut Department of Public Safety in various positions. He was the Public Information Officer for the State Police managing media relations; Communications Officer for the State Fire Marshal addressing press relations and public education; and Communications Officer for the entire department developing and implementing department wide policies.

Adam’s lifelong passions were for his family, his Italian heritage, and golf. For the first two, he established the Patsy and Peppa Berluti Memorial Scholarship fund at his Alma Mater, Colby College. His intent was to help students who were of Italian heritage and in financial need with a way to receive a liberal arts education.

Adam Berluti is the last of his large family. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his twin sister Dolores Sanso and siblings Mary Martin, Iole Mulley, Gina Fulvi, Dina Ambrosini and James P. Berluti. He leaves his “virtual” siblings Vincent Berluti; Frances Koerlin; a favorite great nephew Lester Wooldridge; and many nieces and nephews whom he loved.

Due to current covid-19 health restrictions, all services will be private. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association.
