Obituary: Frederick E. Grether, 87, Of West Haven

A U.S. Army veteran, he graduated from Notre Dame-West Haven and enjoyed his career as a CPA and working for the Knights of Columbus.

WEST HAVEN, CT — (From West Haven Funeral Home): Frederick E. Grether, 87, of West Haven, passed away with his family at his side on December 23, 2022. He was the loving husband of Maureen Donovan Grether.

Fred was born in New Haven, son of the late Robert Sr. and Marie Effinger Grether. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters Tricia (Timothy) Kemperle, Karen Grether, Maureen (Michael) Kery, Michele (Matthew) Cummings and Jennifer Grether, his grandchildren, Jack & Avery Kemperle, Molly & Maggie Kery, Matthew, Caroline & Toby Cummings, and his brother Edward (Thea) Grether and sister-in-law Elizabeth Grether. Fred was predeceased by his brother Robert Grether Jr.

Fred graduated from Notre Dame High School and then from Fairfield University. He enjoyed his career as a CPA, working in various capacities for the Knights of Columbus from 1977 until his retirement in 2000.

Fred was a proud U.S. Army Veteran, achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class in the Reserves. He was an active parishioner of St. John Vianney/Our Lady of Victory Church, a long-time member and past Grand Knight of the West Haven Knights of Columbus, a past Faithful Navigator and past District Deputy of Council 2541.

The hours for visitation will be Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at the West Haven Funeral Home at the Green. His funeral procession will leave the funeral home on Friday morning at 9 for a Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Victory Church, 300 Capt. Thomas Blvd, West Haven at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery.
