Obituary: James McCarthy, 72, Of West Haven

A longtime West Haven firefighter, he retired in 1994 as a lieutenant and was always a presence at the high school sports of his nephews.

WEST HAVEN, CT — (From West Haven Funeral Home): James McCarthy, 72, of West Haven, entered into rest on February 12, 2023.

A son of the late James F. and Alice Sullivan McCarthy, James grew up in West Haven, graduated Notre Dame High School, Class of 1968 and attended Fordham University.

After 21 years of service as a West Haven firefighter, he retired in 1994 as a lieutenant and moved to Las Vegas. In 2015, James moved back to West Haven and settled with his brother and sister-in-law Ed and Marilyn McCarthy.

He enjoyed all things sports whether it was related to the University of Notre Dame, New York Yankees baseball, NCAA sports, and attending the Final Four. Most important was his interest and presence at the high school sports of his nephews.

In addition to Ed and Marilyn, Jim leaves his niece Kerry (Joseph) Olivieri and their son Joseph Olivieri, and 3 nephews Edward (Courtney) McCarthy Jr., Timothy and James McCarthy.

Visitation will take place on Friday, February 17 from 10 a.m. to noon at the West Haven Funeral Home. There are no other services.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the WHFD Historical Library.
