Obituary: Michael J. Zavatkay, 75, of West Haven

He received the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Michael Joseph Zavatkay, born in New Haven on Dec 8, 1943 passed away on Nov. 4, 2019, at his home. He was son of the late Harold E. and Mary Margaret Sweeney Zavatkay. He was a proud Lance corporal Marine, serving in the Vietnam campaign until an honorable discharge. He received the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was a longtime fan of wrestling and fishing.

Michael is predeceased by his beloved wife Linda Weber Zavatkay, his sisters Elizabeth Wypychoski and Ellen Zavatkay, and his nieces Bridget Breunig-Sheahan and Katie Breunig. He is survived by two nephews Harold and Albert Breunig and their families. He also leaves his in-laws, Joseph and Gloria Weber, his beloved furry friend Misou, two special friends Charlene Lewis and Hilary Ford, and many other friends.

A graveside service will be held on March 9 at 2 p.m. in St. Lawrence Cemetery with full military honors.
