Obituary: Richard E. Smallman Jr., 89, Of West Haven
A U.S. Navy veteran, he climbed the ranks of the West Shore Fire Department and served as Fire Marshal and Chief.

WEST HAVEN, CT — (From West Haven Funeral Home): Richard E. Smallman Jr., 89, of West Haven, died at Connecticut Hospice surrounded by his loving family. Born in New Haven on November 21, 1933, a son of the late Richard E. and Charlotte (Stokes) Smallman.
Survived by his beloved wife of almost 67 years, Susann (Ferraro) Smallman; daughters Cheryl (George) Shea, Gail (Danny) Dudek, and Karen (Glenn) Lockhart; son Richard (Renee) Smallman; grandchildren Kayla, Kelly, Justin, Lyndsay, Ryan, Cody, Aaron, and Matthew; as well as three great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by sister Carol Quinn.
Richard served in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1954, touring in Africa as well as Malta. Upon his honorable discharge, Richard joined the West Shore Fire Department in 1955. He climbed the ranks of grade within the department, appointed Fire Marshal in 1968 then Chief in 1977, for which he served until his retirement in 1981.

He was a resolute member of numerous associations, committees and conferences concerning his profession, as illustrated by his proudly serving as past President of the Board of Directors for the New England Fire Marshals Association.
Richard earnestly believed in civic duty and continued to serve within the Army National Guard for over 15 years.

Richard enjoyed woodworking and making doll cradles for his granddaughters. His favorite pastime, however, was that of spending time with his family. He will remain in the hearts and minds of those he leaves behind.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
