Police said New Haven and West Haven police personnel flooded the area and developed information that a suspect, Harvey Nelson, went to an apartment within the building.

“Once the specific apartment was located and the building was surrounded, Nelson eventually surrendered to members of the West Haven Police Department Special Response Team and was taken into custody,” police wrote in a news release. “Thankfully, no officers or civilians were injured during this incident.”

Nelson, 28, was charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree assault and held in lieu of a $500,000 bond.

The Connecticut Post reports Nelson was the driver and a passenger in the vehicle fired the shots at the undercover police vehicle.

Nelson told police he was “surprised” by the shooting, but is also accused of driving the gunman away from the scene, according to the Post.

Nelson was also served with an arrest warrant stemming from a prior domestic dispute, according to police. He was charged with felony larceny, second-degree stalking, and second-degree assault.

Police said Nelson was also charged with three counts of failure to appear stemming from warrants issued by the New Haven, Naugatuck and Bridgeport police departments.
