Truck Driver Hospitalized, Cited for Crash that Closed Part of I-95 South

A tractor-trailer accident closed part of I-95 South near the New Haven/West Haven line on Wednesday morning.

UPDATE: The driver of the tractor-trailer involved in a crash that temporarily closed part of I-95 South near the New Haven/West Haven line on Wednesday morning was cited for the accident.

State Police say the tractor-trailer was traveling in the center of three lanes just south of Exit 44. The truck slowed and the load on the trailer shifted, eventually breaking free, according to police.

The load rolled down the trailer, striking the cab portion of the truck, police said.

The truck sustained heavy damage in the crash and was towed from the scene.

The driver, Michael Chebro, 61, of Derby, was treated and transported to Yale New Haven Hospital for evaluation of his injuries via AMR.

Chebro was also issued an infraction for the accident. He was charged with operating a vehicle improperly loaded or constructed to carry and traveling too fast for conditions.

UPDATE, 11:25 a.m.: Connecticut State Police say the driver of the tractor trailer was trapped in the accident. He is conscious and the fire department is extricating him.

I-95 South between Exits 44 and 43 is closed and traffic is being diverted off 44 and back on again, according to police.
