The middle school student will represent Connecticut at the national spelling bee.

WEST HAVEN, CT — West Haven’s Arain Bhandari turned 12 years old on Friday and capped a big weekend by taking home the title as the state’s best speller on Saturday.

Bhandari, a sixth-grade student at Carrigan Middle School, told WFSB 3 that after he managed to win the statewide spelling bee, “I’m like ‘best birthday gift, ever.’”

Bhandari beat out 34 other spellers who won their local competitions and correctly spelled 14 words before taking home the gold by spelling “onus,” according to the Hartford Courant.
