West Haven Man Killed In Shooting In New Haven: Police

The man died after being shot outside of a nightclub in New Haven, according to police.

NEW HAVEN, CT — A West Haven man was shot and killed outside of a nightclub in New Haven early Thursday morning, according to police.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Otis Powell, New Haven police spokesperson Sgt. Cherelle Carr said in an update on Friday.

Carr said New Haven police officers were on “preventive patrol” in the area of Terminal 110 at 240 Sargent Drive around 12:50 a.m. on Nov. 23.

As patrons were leaving the business, Carr said officers reported hearing gunfire. An officer was then approached by a man who reported he was shot, according to Carr.

New Haven Fire Department and American Medical Response emergency units responded to the scene.

The victim was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where Carr said he died from his injuries during the early morning hours.

Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit and Bureau of Identification gathered evidence, interviewed witnesses, and searched for surveillance footage.

Shotspotter was not activated in the area, but Carr said “ballistic evidence was found on scene.”
