West Haven Mayor Criticized For Proposing Raise For Herself: Report

Mayor Nancy Rossi's proposed budget includes raises for the mayor and city clerk positions, a proposal that is being criticized by some.

WEST HAVEN, CT — West Haven Mayor Nancy Rossi is being criticized by some, including former Mayor Ed O’Brien, for proposing a 2-percent raise for the mayor’s position in the 2023 fiscal year, according to the New Haven Register.

The Register reports Rossi’s proposed budget included a 2-percent raise for the elected positions of mayor and city clerk, similar to the 2-percent salary increase for city employees. However, O’Brien argued Rossi doesn’t have the authority to propose a raise for herself during an elected term, according to the Register.

The mayor’s compensation is set by the City Council, and Rossi told the Register she consulted with two attorneys before proposing the increase.
