This Is ‘The Best Hole-In-The-Wall Pizza Joint’ In CT, New List Reveals

The iconic pizzeria ranks as Connecticut's best "hole-in-the-wall pizza joint," according to media company The Takeout.

WEST HAVEN, CT — While West Haven’s Zuppardi’s Apizza already ranks among Wooster Street’s iconic institutions as the best pizza in the New Haven area, and the state, the family-run restaurant can add another accolade to its list.

Media company The Takeout this week released its list for “The Best Hole-In-The-Wall Pizza Joint In Every State” and recognized Zuppardi’s Apizza as the best in Connecticut.

In the rankings, the staff at The Takeout set out to “uncover those hole-in-the-wall, smaller, mom and pop type pizza shops specifically, where those who own the eateries are there, boots on the ground, giving their all to ensure every slice is nothing less than perfection.”

For its methodology, The Takeout used customer reviews, checked in on food critics, browsed "best of" lists and national rankings, and “factored in firsthand experiences (both ours and the kind people can't stop talking about online),” according to its website.

“A tiny sanctuary in West Haven, Zuppardi's Apizza, is about as old-school, real-deal as it gets,” The Takeout wrote of Zuppardi’s. “This third-generation pizzeria traces its roots back to a bread baker who knew his way around dough long before ‘apizza’ became a thing. That foundation still shows in every slice, especially in a crust locals wax eloquent about. Considered a top pick in Connecticut, when talking New Haven-style pizza, Zuppardi's has officially entered the chat.”

Zuppardi’s, located at 179 Union Avenue in West Haven, started out as a bakery and was founded by Dominic Zuppardi, who was a master bread-baker in New Haven throughout the 1920s. He worked in a variety of bakeries making artisan Italian breads, as well as "abeetz," according to the Zuppardi's website.

Dominic suffered a stroke in the late 1940s and his son Anthony eventually took over the daily operations of the business and recognized the popularity of the bakery's pizza and made it his primary focus.

Anthony Zuppardi passed away in 1988, but his children and grandchildren continue to operate Zuppardi's today.
