CONSERVATION, LAND USE, WATERSHED, & ENVIRONMENTAL PRESERVATION ISSUES

CCM END OF SESSION UPDATE MEETING: I attended the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities (CCM) Legislative End of Session update meeting on Thursday. Unfortunately for environmental and conservation efforts, some drastic zoning bills were proposed, which would eliminate single-family home-only zoning and eliminate local control of zoning decisions. These proposed measures did not pass -- but they indicate future and very aggressive agendas backed by real estate developers.

GET READY TO GO WILD, EASTON! We are hosting an “Easton Day” at Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport on Saturday, May 16th, with complimentary admission for 150 residents on a first-come, first-served basis. Please bring some type of identification to show that you are an Easton resident at the ticket booth. And, on Sunday, June 7th, we have arranged for complimentary admission for 50 Easton residents (first-come, first-served) at Earthplace in Westport, which also offers youth summer camps.

FREE BIRD GUIDE: Pick up a waterproof Backyard Birds of the Northeast guide, now available at Town Hall on a first-come, first-served basis. Courtesy of Bill Karesh, these handy, easy-to-use guides are perfect for bird lovers of all ages—whether you’re identifying visitors at your backyard feeder or exploring local trails. Stop by and grab one while supplies last – they are going quick!

PROPOSED TRAIL LINKS EASTON TO LONG ISLAND SOUND: A proposed 13.8-mile “Harbor to Hills Greenway” would connect Fairfield’s border with Easton to Long Island Sound, linking open spaces, schools, and community sites along a continuous walking route. About 90% of the trail would use existing public land, making it a feasible way to unify Fairfield’s open-space system while improving pedestrian access for residents, students, and families. The project is still in early stages, with Fairfield seeking state funding to support planning and design.

TURTLE CROSSING SEASON is underway around town, so please drive carefully and stay alert, especially on Sanford Drive and Church Road to North Park Avenue near ponds and wetlands. Many turtles are traveling to lay eggs this time of year. If you stop to help a turtle cross the road, please make sure to move it in the same direction it was already heading.

HELP US PROTECT EASTON’S NATURAL BEAUTY: Learn how you can help protect Easton’s natural beauty by preventing the spread of invasive plant species in your own backyard. Oriental Bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus) is a very aggressive vine that smothers other vegetation. It has twining stems that strangle shrub and tree limbs, and the weight of the vine can uproot and topple trees. Birds are attracted to the berries and spread the seed. The vine also spreads by root suckering. DO NOT BUY OR PLANT. To control, pull small plants, including roots. Cut larger vines close to the ground every two weeks to prevent resprouting and to deplete the root system. Properly dispose of seeds (Do NOT compost. Bag or burn vines).

Oriental Bittersweet Invasive Vine

BEACH SEASON IS HERE! If you’re planning to enjoy Jennings or Penfield Beach in Fairfield this summer, be sure to visit the Fairfield website to purchase a “J” Sticker for parking access (Application Here). Wishing everyone a fun, relaxing, and sunny summer by the water!

STATE BUDGET & EDUCATION FUNDING As the legislative session concludes, an additional education aid of $12,085 will go to our Board of Education. This clearly isn’t enough in terms of tax relief from the state to defray our rising education costs and unfunded educational mandates. Indications are that we will receive $20,603 for the Town budget in supplemental Pequot-Mohegan funding, which we had previously lost. Overall, the Connecticut General Assembly approved a $28.1 billion state budget, which increases municipal aid by $283 million, including a $162.2 million increase in Education Cost Sharing (ECS) funding to provide additional education funding for all towns. The budget, SB-1, also provides $100 million in one-time aid to towns for non-education purposes. However, Easton got very little; you can review what every municipality got on this spreadsheet HERE. By some criteria, the State considers Easton to be “overfunded” based on older valuations and the lack of poverty criteria used in the formulas. Additional state budget information

CONGRESSMAN JIM HIMES VISITS EASTON TOWN HALL. Congressman Jim Himes came to Easton on Wednesday for a meet-and-greet and a productive discussion about issues affecting our community. I invited Selectman Nick D’Addario to help with the meeting because he knows Jim Himes well. During the visit, I talked to Congressman Himes about our roof grant funding application that we applied for in April and gave him a tour of Town Hall, including an overview of the damage caused by roof leaks and the challenges the building continues to face. We appreciate Congressman Himes taking the time to come to Easton and learn more about our community’s needs firsthand, and we hope to receive a grant through his office in the future. He kindly said “Easton is one of the most beautiful Towns he visits.”

PUBLIC SAFETY: Please remember to “Slow Down in Our Town” and help keep our roads safe by avoiding speeding. We also have one remaining “Take It Slow” yard sign available at the First Selectman’s Office, for anyone interested.

FROM EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT DIRECTOR, SCHUYLER SHERWOOD: NATIONAL HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS WEEK 2026: Take Action Now to Protect Your Home and Family
As the Atlantic hurricane season approaches on June 1, the Town of Easton and national weather experts are observing National Hurricane Preparedness Week (May 3–9, 2026). With an average season producing 14 named storms and seven hurricanes, residents are urged to use this "blue sky" period to finalize emergency plans and gather essential supplies. First Selectman Lent and Emergency Management Director Schuyler Sherwood would like to remind all citizens that preparation remains the most effective way to protect your family and community. Taking time now to understand your risk and prepare your home can make all the difference when severe weather approaches. There are key steps citizens should take now to prepare for the upcoming hurricane season:

  • Refresh your emergency supply kit with at least three days of food, water, and medicine per person.
  • Identify a safe place to ride out the storm. This may be your home away from windows. You may want to stay with relatives or friends if you are elderly or have care needs.
  • Finalize a written hurricane plan and consider an insurance checkup to ensure coverage for hurricane damage, especially if you are prone to flash flooding.
  • Photograph your home and property. Know where your insurance information is.
  • Trim trees, secure gutters, and remove trees that could cause damage to your home
  • Develop a neighbor-helping-neighbor plan. Know how you can get a hold of someone who may be less able to care for themselves.
  • Have your generators serviced. If you are able, consider an alternative power source such as a generator. You should anticipate being out of power for up to 7 Days.

Residents are encouraged to visit Ready.gov or their local emergency management website for detailed checklists and resources. The Town of Easton is also preparing. Members of your Emergency Management Team have met with the UI company to review their storm response protocols. Within the coming months, we will be implementing a new town-wide notification system, Everbridge, which will be an efficient method of notifying each of you of critical information. Watch for more information on this. Your Department of Public Works is already preparing for the storm season. First Selectman Lent is in constant contact with the Emergency Team to make sure we are prepared as reasonably possible for the upcoming hurricane season.

UNITED ILLUMINATING TOUR: On Monday, in addition to implementing the new townwide emergency notification system discussed above, I had the opportunity to tour United Illuminating’s operations facility together with our representative, Gary Lane, to gain a better understanding of how the company prepares for emergencies and responds to major weather events and power outages. It was impressive to see firsthand the level of planning, coordination, and technology involved in keeping residents safe and restoring service as quickly as possible. From emergency response protocols to communication systems and field operations, the visit provided valuable insight into the extensive work that takes place behind the scenes before, during, and after a storm. I appreciate UI taking the time to share their preparedness efforts and ongoing commitment to our community.

SAVE ON ENERGY! With summer A/C season approaching, now is a great time to review your electricity generation rates. Customers can compare offers from licensed suppliers through Connecticut’s Supplier Rate Finder and Rate Board, which may help lower energy costs. Since cancellation fees are no longer allowed, you can switch suppliers more easily to take advantage of better rates as they become available.

SHELTER UPDATE: These dogs deserve more than a kennel—they deserve a person to love and a home where they can truly thrive. Each one is ready to give loyalty, companionship, and unconditional love to the right family. Please help spread the word so they have the chance to find the caring homes they deserve and live their very best lives.

Resue Dogs

Meet SNOOPY – the dog with the underbite, the zoom energy, and the biggest heart in the room. This 4-year-old mix spent his early years as a support dog, giving comfort until his human could no longer keep him. He lost his job through no fault of his own, and now he is looking for someone to love. Snoopy is goofy, joyful, and loyal to the bone. He’ll zoom circles around you, savor every walk, and remind you daily that life is good. Give this sweet boy the forever home he’s always deserved.

PARKER is pure swagger in a 2-year-old body. The Jack Russell-Basset Hound mix has the confidence of a dog three times his size and joie de vivre to match - he will absolutely make you laugh! Give him 15 minutes to suss you out, and he’ll be your best friend for life. Parker loves walks, is loyal to his humans, and has curiosity to spare. He’d benefit from some basic training to channel that big personality, but honestly, his sass is half the charm! Cat-free home preferred. Ready to live his best life with someone who appreciates extra flair.

APPLEJACK is the kind of dog that earns your trust and never lets you go. This seasoned 11-year-old Heeler is fully trained – stops and sits at every curb, walks beautifully on a leash, and is loyal to her person to the core. She is a love puddle happy with a good walk, a cozy bed, and a toy or two. Don’t let her age fool you – she’s got plenty of life left. As a true Heeler, she has a strong prey drive (squirrel beware!), so she’d thrive as an only pet in a home with older kids and an adult who can handle 85 pounds with opinions. Applejack deserves a soft landing – could that be your home?

If interested, please reach out to the Easton Animal Control at 203-268-9172.

Wishing everyone a happy Mother’s Day on Sunday!

THREE TOWN TOUR - MAY 30 - AS PART OF AMERICA 250
From its earliest days, Fairfield was a sprawling town. Stretching from the Saugatuck River in the west to what is now Bridgeport’s Park Avenue in the east, and northward to the hills of Redding, Fairfield’s original bounds encompassed a vast and dynamic region. With a flourishing population, new parishes and religious beliefs took root, and distant communities began to forge their own paths. Thus emerged the neighboring towns of Redding, Westport, Weston, and Easton—shaped from Fairfield lands. Join us for a special bus tour to discover the unique stories found in Fairfield, Weston, and Easton, and explore the shared history among all three towns. At the end of the bus tour, join us for a special opening reception for the special exhibition “Happy Anniversary! Centenary Celebrations & Beyond” at the Fairfield Museum. Co-presented by Weston History & Culture Center and Historical Society of Easton. Registration is required. $80/person. Buy tickets HERE
